由鋼琴家鮑布．詹姆斯提攜的薩克斯風手Kirk Whalum，不僅在爵士界嶄露頭角，幫流行藝人吹奏也不乏實例，其中惠妮．休斯頓在電影【終極保鏢】插曲」I Will Always Love You」，應是其中大眾最熟悉的。
1958 年出生在曼菲斯的Kirk Whalum，從父親的教堂唱詩班中伴奏出身，但小時候他聽的多是搖滾樂，像皇后合唱團和節奏藍調像Chaka Khan、Isley Brothers…
由於曼菲斯地處多方音樂的交會區，所以Whalum 曾嘗試不同風格：福音、節奏藍調到三角洲藍調，最後才選擇爵士。
Kirk 不但在電影」終極保鏢」中有令人難以忘懷的動人獨奏以外，在其他的專輯當中也可以聽到他的聲音。如Michael Card 的」Scribbling in the Sand」 ，Phil Keggy 的」In The Quiet Hours」 當中也有令人驚艷的表現。
