一個因倒閉破產而服刑的丈夫，在即將服刑期滿返家的前夕，因擔心遠在家鄉的妻子無法接受他，所以寫了封信告訴他的妻子，如果願意再次接納他，請在他出獄返 家的當天，在家門口前那棵老橡樹上繫上一條黃絲帶；如果他沒有看到黃絲帶的話，他也會識相的默默離開。而在出獄的當天返家的車上，丈夫緊張的心情竟讓他快 到家門口時緊張的不敢張開雙眼，反而懇求司機先生幫他看一下他家的橡樹上是不是有綁任何東西…最後謎底揭曉，車上響起一陣又一陣的歡呼聲，丈夫這才慢慢張 開雙眼，竟然看到老橡樹上綁滿數以百計的黃絲帶在空中飛揚，瞬間熱淚盈框！這不只是一個真實的故事，更是一首在全世界傳唱的經典歌曲，「Tie a Yellow Ribbon ’Round the Ole Oak Tree」這首歌後來也成為全美的一種約定俗成：綁上黃絲帶，以歡迎久別的親人回家！
這首歌的原唱，就是在70年代的早期與「黎明合唱團」２位美麗合聲組合的合作而大受歡迎的湯尼奧蘭多。這位擁有波多黎各和希臘血統的歌手在16歲時就有機 會參加當時知名製作人Don Kirshner.的試音，17歲就發行第一支單曲「Halfway to Paradise」但銷售平平，讓原本一心嚮往演藝生涯的湯尼備受打擊。但也許危機就是轉機，以「The Lion Sleeps Tonight」走紅的Tokens 合唱團團員 Hank Medress 在一次偶然的情況下請湯尼擔任當時只有2位合音Telma Hopkins和Joyce Vincent組成的「黎明合唱團」的幕後主唱並演唱「Candida」、「Knock Three Times」等歌曲，沒想到大受歡迎，只是成績一直無法更進一步，直到演唱「Tie a Yellow Ribbon ’Round the Ole Oak Tree」才真正的大受歡迎，不僅在1973年登上美國金榜４週冠軍，更被提名當時的葛萊美獎，湯尼奧蘭多與「黎明合唱團」這個組合也正式出道。
